WHY Blog?

To Reflect, Practice, Record, Inspire, and Empower.

One of the most valuable assets of an educator is the ability to reflect on their teaching practice. Blogging allows me to reflect on what went well, what didn't go well, and what could go better in terms of what I'm doing both personally and professionally in the classroom.  I have found that a lot of my reflection goes on during long periods of PD travel. Blogging allows for me to write down these ideas so that I intentionally revisit and learn from them.

The practice... Growing up I never enjoyed writing. I always seem to struggle to find the right words and I always waited until the very last minute to complete any writing assignments because it gave me a lot of time to sit back and collect my thoughts. Today I still struggle with that, but I find the more that I practice my writing through blogging, the better my writing has become. Being a connected educator and participating in chats on Twitter, has also allowed me an opportunity to recreate my educational philosophy.

No time is more important than now to make sure that you are recording what you to do tell your story. There is a lot of accountability with educator effectiveness and PDPs.  The more that I can record, the greater chance I have in collecting artifacts to produce evidence of my learning and the impact that it has on student learning.

Much of the writing I do comes from the inspiration that I get from my PLN. As a digital citizen I feel is important that we are both not only consumers but also creators who allow for others to pirate some of the great things that we do.  So many of my ideas have been inspired by conversations with other educators online on Twitter and I feel it's only fair that I give back to my PLN for all that they share with me.  Participating on Twitter and in these professional learning networks and communities has allowed my creativity to increase tenfold.  My hope is that I can inspire fellow educators so that they will be empowered to do things that they never believed were possible.
