Gamify & Pirate Up Your Sub Plans
This weekend when I finally got a second to breathe and get out of the house, I found some of my time best spent was walking through the Toy Land Aisles of Fleet Farm looking for inspiration. The games popped out at me and the thought of gamification crossed my mind. I've always wanted to do it, I just haven't had the time to think it out. Running errands, it all came together.
PIRATES....Saving the Earth One Biome at a Time.
I was going to be out of the classroom on Monday, but I couldn't wait to introduce this concept and I was leaving a lot behind for the substitute. I had really high expectations of what was going to happen in class while I was gone. Instead of leaving behind a novel of written instructions that may be confusing, I decided to create a video to introduce our gamification story line and to give instructions of my expectations for the period. This also including me telling students who exactly was going to be a part of their crew. CAUTION: It contains a lot of KORN! and was produced WAY past my bedtime.
This seemed to go over really well. Students enjoyed the video, and I cannot wait to pirate up my sub plans next week as I am away presenting at a conference. Thank you to the #tlap crew for your continued support. This video is WAY out of my comfort zone. Students asked me, "how many takes did that video take you?" Just two, compared to the 42 for the last video that I created :). Below you will find a few of my favorite Ship Flags that my students created. If you look closely, there is some "pirate" in them.
