A Mini Lesson on Copyright and Citing Sources

During the course of the our wave studies and wave presentations, we felt that it was relevant to include a mini lesson on copyright: both to explain what it is, and share with students how they can protect their own work.

First, we showed them a catchy music video on copyright:  Copyright, What’s Copyright?

The next thing we did was share with them the teacher/student Copyright Rules that we were given to us teachers during our Summer Writing Workshop, while we talked specifically about music (how much was legal to use from a copyrighted song).  I also introduced the soundzabound website where students have access to royalty free music.

Third, we introduced to students how they can protect their work using Creative Commons.  I showed this video to give them a preview of the licenses available to their work:  Creative Commons Kiwi.  We talked about specific instances in which this would be helpful both for school, and our everyday lives.  For me specifically, I could see myself using it with my biology photography.

Finally, we introduced APA Format and Citing Sources.  One of the requirements for their project is that all sources must be reported in APA Format, and all photos/images must include the weblink to give them credit as to where they came from.  We showed them the different tools they could use for APA formatting:
  • Chrome APA Formatting and EasyBib Apps
  • Son of Citation Machine (Preferred by Students) Our students have had experience with this in middle school.  I hyperlinked the website to my webpage so that students could find it easily without having to navigate through the Library Media Webpage to find it.
