My Educational Philosophy

The purpose of this blog is to highlight some of the things that I have been doing to incorporate technology and inquiry into my classroom.  My educational philosophy has grown to include the topics of:  inquiry, 21st century skills, technology (ISTE Net Standards), global education, project based learning, and the flipped classroom.  As I get time I will highlight some of the examples in which I've incorporated each of these topics into teaching physical science and chemistry.

This is my second year having the privilege of teaching the APES course at our school.  No I don't teach primates (even though some days it might feel like it). When I took over the AP Environmental Science course I inherited a 60 gallon river flow tank that came with the course/classroom.  As a child we had a few fish tanks at home, but nothing that I ever had the responsibility of taking care of.  That was dad's job.  I only picked out the fish.  Last school year students set up the tank to earn project point hours and we got to the point of adding plants, but we never added critters. I wasn't sure what to put in there. Celebrating One Another: Building Positive Staff Culture With Intentionality

Building and maintaining school culture is something I'm passion about and within my instructional coaching role I feel a personal responsibility to be a part of this work.  I am fortunate that our other building instructional leaders also sees this as a priority.  I get a lot of great ideas for this on Twitter and the Principal Principles Facebook Group. Door Hanger Snack Delivery Snacks/Food- One of the ways that we promote community and positive culture is sharing one another's company over snacks and food.  That might look like a snack cart delivery during the first week back to school, a caramel apple bar for a morning PD snack, a staff pot luck on a PD day, ice cream floats for an afternoon snack after PD, smoothie/yogurt bar the morning of conferences, occasional Bagel Fairy drop ins (in the morning), chocolate at team meetings, or snacks brought to week long professional development sessions in Chicago. Let them Lead -- From Learners to Leaders in Makerspace Vision and Design

This is the beginning of a series of a few blog entries on KMIT Summer Academy Boot Camp. KMIT is our "Kettle Moraine Innovation Team" (learner tech team). In an effort to train our learners prior to next school year we ran a Boot Camp for learners in grades 5-9 (for 6 weeks, 2 hours/day) to learn the ropes of what KMIT is, be challenged to exercise leadership and good customer service, create videos, design websites, and create the vision for our KMMS Makerspace. This is another instances in which learners became co-creators of a learning experience.
